When you’re looking to freshen up your home for sale, changing the exterior paint can make a big difference. It helps with curb appeal which plays a major factor in resale value. So choosing one of the year’s exterior paint color trends can be the first step in getting a great offer.
Top Exterior Paint Color Trends to Consider for 2021
Warm Whites
White House white is out, but off-whites and creams are actually one of the biggest exterior paint color trends for 2021. But to really nail the trend, you’ll want to choose warm whites with wood accents.
A few of the hues we especially love include Swiss Coffee and Seapearl by Benjamin Moore. But we also love Benjamin Moore’s Alabaster, which is inherently sophisticated and endlessly versatile —perfect for a transitional modern off-white look that works with a variety of styles.
Beige
You read that right, beige is back, because a beautiful beige is hard to beat! But in 2021, some of the most popular exterior beiges are warm and closer to off-white, definitely without previous iterations’ tendency to lean toward yellow. If this is appealing to you, we recommend Accessible Beige.
For a beige that remains bright, clean and cheery, but has warmer notes, we lean toward a beige like Tapestry Beige which is timeless and elegant and has been a favorite for years — for good reason.
And if you’re leaning toward darker beige, more like a warm earthy gray, we suggest Thunder by Benjamin Moore. This color looks especially amazing with white siding, which is one of the exterior paint color trends for 2021.
Grey
Greys have been in style for a while, and they aren’t going anywhere in 2021, though the year’s popular grays are moodier than in the past. There has been a rise in dark gray, almost black, home exteriors recently which oddly seems less of a trend, and more of a twist on a classic. Some of our favorite dark grays include Wrought Iron by Benjamin Moore and with a blue undertone, Gray Shower.
Other hues that brings a lot of stylistic elements together are Kendall Charcoal and the much darker Soot by Benjamin Moore. These exceptionally neutral grey tones work well with dark accent colors, are a great backdrop for your yard’s greenery, and even bring out the warmth of stained woods.
And if you’re looking for something that falls just in between, take a look at Iron Mountain which has inviting warm tones and pairs well with brown accents in stone, mulch, bronze metal or copper.
Slate Blues
When blues and grey come together, the result is pure perfection when it comes to exterior paint color trends. A slate blue is serene, and it reads like a unique neutral. Slate blue colors have just the right mount of personality, but aren’t so unusual that they won’t appeal to a wide variety of home buyers.
Slate blue is one of those colors that comes in so many different varieties, that you’ll want to pay particular attention to how the one you choose looks during different times of the day and under different levels of cloud coverage.
Slate Blue and Amsterdam are both easy-to-use blues with a good deal of grey. Lighter than most slates, Aegean Teal is also a unique blend of blue-green and grey, which presents an intriguing shade that works equally well with whites, mosses, dark browns, and even black trims.
Pewter is also a perfect color that is going to be everywhere — in the best way — in 2021. It looks great with natural wood accents or glossy white trim and has remarkable depth and presence.
Navy (or Darker)
Like slate, navy is a color that ranges greatly. While some appear solidly blue, others veer toward royal. We think that exteriors should have more neutrality, so we suggest Westcott Navy or Hale Navy by Benjamin Moore, which both work on a variety of home styles, from seaside cottages to midcentury modern townhomes.
We’re also surprisingly attracted to Onyx, which is all about adding contrast. Some will choose to just use it on garage doors or around windows, but it can — and should — also be used as a bold saturating color to paint sections of the home or as the trim for darker-toned siding.
No matter which hue you choose you can’t go wrong with any of these exterior paint color trends that will make your home look fantastic and ready to sell.
